Cleopatra Birthday Party with Shrinky Dinks

I am having so much fun planning a Cleopatra Birthday Party for an Egypt-loving first grader. She and her friend Z. came to one of my Powerful Princess workshops, learned about Cleopatra, and fell in LOVE with Egypt. They are now Egyptologists, they tell me, and take their studies very seriously. I love their passion.

We will be making cartouches from shrinky drinks. My sister loved these as a kid. You cut shapes from sheets of plastic, write on it with colored pencils or permanent markers, and bake them in the oven at 325 for three minutes. They shrink and thicken and harden. Of course, before we bake them, the girls will use this cool stencil ruler I found to translate their names into hieroglyphs. A cartouche was a representation of the Pharaoh’s name surrounded by a magic rope that gave it protective powers.

We’ll also make pyramids from sugar cubes, and have a mummy-wrapping contest with toilet paper. It should be a great time.
